1864-S $5 XF45 PCGS. A bright reddish-golden example w 1864-S[$5] XF45 PCGS.
1864-S<$5> XF45 PCGS. A bright reddish-golden example with extensive areas of softness beyond wear on the major design elements. Curiously, this deficiency is absent on the eagle's wings. Several facial marks provide modest distraction, while a series of shallow digs in the left reverse field is also noted. Even though the average collector probably wouldn't pick it out in a lineup of scarce No Motto Fives, the 1864-S is one of the most important rarities within the Liberty half eagle series. It is exceeded in scarcity only by the 1842 Large Letters, 1843-O Small Letters, 1875 (with a mintage of just 200 pieces), and the legendary 1854-S. The various C and D mint Half Eagles, for all their popularity and difficulty, do not even come close to the 1864-S. We doubt that more than two dozen pieces exist from a paltry mintage of 3,888 coins. Population: 3 in 45, 4 finer (11/05).
From The Guadalupe Collection.
