1864-S $20 MS61 PCGS. Ex: Brother Jonathan 355. Fictional character Brother Jonathan was the early 19th century equivalent of Uncle Sam, a personification of the United States. The S.S. Brother Jonathan made its first voyage on November 11, 1850. It sank on July 30, 1865, near the Oregon coastline, with a loss of approximately 200 lives. The wreck was discovered on September 30, 1992 by Deep Sea Research, Inc.
This satiny peach-gold example is generally well struck, with minor softness on a few letters in STATES OF. There are no heavy marks, which is unusual for an MS61 double eagle. An outstanding souvenir from one of the three most famous American numismatic shipwrecks (the other two were the S.S. Central America and S.S. Republic.)
Ex: The S.S. Brother Jonathan Treasure Coins (Bowers and Merena, 5/99), lot 358, which realized $6,900.
From The Vanek Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
