1864-S $20 MS61 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. Small S mintmark, believed scarce. Full cartwheel luster sweeps across the surprisingly unblemished fields and devices, given the MS61 grade. The strike is precise aside from the 64 in the date, and opposite on the O in OF, presumably because of a slightly inaccurate die alignment. The reverse die is unfinished on each side of the eagle's tail and along the lower inner border of the scrolls, while the obverse die is distinguished by minute die doubling along the bust truncation, visible beneath Longacre's initials. The dies were produced at Philadelphia and shipped to San Francisco, a practice that would continue until late in the 20th century. A presentation case, booklet, and DVD from Odyssey Marine Exploration accompanies the lot.
From The Arroyo Grande Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
