1864 S$1 PR67 NGC. Perhaps surprising for a proof Silver Dollar from the 1860s, the 1864 is represented by quite a few spectacular specimens in today's market. Of course, we are using the term "quite a few" in a relative sense as NGC and PCGS combined report only eight coins in grades from PR66 through PR68 (1/03). Falling in the middle of this range, this PR67 specimen easily qualifies for Condition Census standing. Both sides are richly and originally toned in overlying antique-copper hues. There are also cornucopiae of cobalt, gold, lilac, and orange undertones evident as the surfaces dip into the light. The devices are needle sharp in strike, and every feature is silent on the subject of grade-limiting blemishes. This important Superb Gem is finer than the proof 1864 Seated Dollar that we sold as lot 4093 in our April 2002 sale of the impressive Morris Silverman Collection. Although produced to the extent of just 470 pieces, Breen (1977) and Bowers (1993) report three different die marriages for the proof 1864. The present example most closely matches the diagnostics for the variety that Breen describes as B-2: 1. The obverse shield point is over the flag of the 1 in the date. 2. The right base of the 4 in the date is over the left side of a denticle. 3. Two arrowheads on the reverse are joined by a defect. 4. Unfinished areas are seen around the uppermost reverse olive leaves. This reverse die was also used to deliver some of the proof 1863 Dollars. From the Philip Kaufman Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
