In contrast to the 1864 Breen-1 in PR63 PCGS offered in this sale, this specimen is from a different obverse die and is mated to the same reverse die. Breen-2 was called his "centered date" with the shield point over the tip of the 1 in the date, and the right base of the 4 slightly left of the center of a dentil. Breen called this variety "very rare." We encourage those interested in die varieties to compare these two lots and note the differences in the obverse dies. This specimen has nice color and surfaces. The obverse and reverse are toned a pleasing shade of gray mixed with deeper blue and purple coloration, which is especially notable on the obverse. There is a lighter area of toning to the left of Liberty's head in the fields under stars 6 and 7.
