Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonel Proof Coins lists three varieties for proof silver dollars dated 1863. This specimen matches Breen's description for B-1, his "large date," which used the same logotype used on the double eagle. Relative to the other varieties for the year, the date is well to the right, the shield point is far left of the 1 in the date, and the right base of the 4 is nearly over the right edge of a dentil. It is interesting to note that Breen described this variety as: "Obtainable, if you are content to wait, to pay more than expected, and to be prepared to receive cleaned coins." Since there are not that many collectors interested in, or who can afford, to collect proof Seated dollars by die variety this is a chance to pick up a nice example of a scarcer variety of the date. This specimen is toned medium gray on both sides, with the obverse slightly lighter in color than the reverse. Liberty's portrait is highlighted in reddish-gold, while the reverse is intermixed with a deeper gray and bluish-purple toning. This specimen has nice surfaces with no marks of note. We note a dark streak across part of the upper-left reverse, which will perhaps someday help someone to trace the pedigree of this coin.
