1864<S$1> MS62 PCGS. Bowers (1993) notes that silver dollars of the 1864 year did not circulate domestically, and their rarity today, especially in Mint State, is explained by the fact that most were exported. PCGS has seen 21 Uncirculated specimens, and NGC just 14 (6/05). It is likewise instructive to review past auction records, indicating that only 17 Mint State examples have made appearances through the major houses over the past 15 years. The MS62 specimen offered in this lot displays crisply struck design elements, and bright surfaces visited by whispers of faint tan-gray color in localized areas. A few trivial marks are reported on Liberty's motif, but these, along with wispy slidemarks in the fields, are not offensive. Population: 5 in 62, 15 finer (6/05).
From The Dr. John L.
