This original Journal starts on October 12, 1864 with the Schooner “J.R. Mather” sailing from Bristol, Rhode Island towards Cuba. There are 62 pages of handwritten notes in this Journal providing the date the time, the ships speed, the wind direction as well as remarks. The pages of this rare Civil War Era Journal are in extremely good condition! The brown marbled paper covered boards are worn and chipped on the corners and otherwise in very nice original condition.

The ship arrived in Cuba on the 26th day of October and on the 4th of November was on its way back to Bristol. The J.R. Mather arrived in Bristol on November 18th, and on the 21st day of December was on its way back to Cuba. It arrived in Cuba on the 15th of January, and on the 5th day of February was on its way back to Bristol, Rhode Island where it arrived on February 18th, 1865. On April 20, 1865 the ship “John R. Mather” was in Fall River, Massachusetts and on that same day again set sail for Malanzes, Cuba.

On Thursday May 18th the journal reads, "Schooner John R. Mather Laying in Matanzes, J.P. Collins Master." On the 26th of May the... "Schooner J.R. Mather Laying in Cardenas, Cuba". On the 5th day of June the J.R. Mather was again sailing back to Bristol. The ship was back in Rhode island on the 17th of June. On June 28th the J.R. Mather was leaving Fall River, Massachusetts for Cape Brenton. This Journal ends on July 3rd, 1865. Overall, a very original Civil War period Ship’s Log of a Merchant Schooner’s voyages as actually journalized at that time, sailing and trading between New England and Cuba.
