A very attractive high grade example with a decent quality strike and tops when it comes to eye appeal. Nearly flawless surfaces. Typically, the dies used to strike the issues this year were used until they fell apart. Finding a Red Mint State 64 with surfaces as clean as this coin creates a challenge to all but the most serious collector. This is one of the more beautiful 1864 With L's there is. It certainly looks better than the typical a MS64RD.
The 1864 With L design is a minor revision made it would seem late in the year. With an estimated mintage of about 5 million, this is one of the semi-key dates in the series. The design includes Chief Engraver James B. Longacre's initial "L" on the lower ribbon. All issues after this have the small L but you can miss it if you do not know it is there. The portrait was also modified for the 1864-L, changing back to a narrow bust point style last used in 1859 and 1860 pointed bust issues.
