1864 H10C PR67 NGC. To understand the significance of a high grade proof such as this, one first must understand the scarcity of high grade business strikes. The official mintage for the 1864 was 48,000 business strikes. However, the number of survivors do not support such a mintage. In the 1970s, Kam Ahwash theorized that if mintage ratios of Half Dimes that existed for 1863, 1865, 1866, and 1867 also prevailed for 1864, then the true mintage for the 1863 would have been approximately 14,500 pieces. Breen was also impressed by the unavailability of this issue and estimated that only 80-100 pieces exist today in all grades. Regarding the proofs, 470 pieces were struck. Attrition or wrong mintage figures did not take a heavy toll on the number of proof survivors as it did with business strikes. But it certainly places strong date pressure on the few high grade proofs that are still extant today. This is an original striking with the top of the D closed. The fields are bright and glassy with mirror-like reflectivity on each side. The obverse is primarily sea-green in hue with a light accent of golden-rose around the margin. The reverse, on the other hand, has a bright golden center with sky-blue peripheral color. Close examination does not reveal any distracting marks or hairlines, but the surfaces display microscopic granularity from tiny gas bubbles that percolated to the top of the planchet and popped just prior to striking. Population: 2 in 67, only one piece is finer at either of the major services (11/02).From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
