1864 G$1 MS66 PCGS. The 1864 gold dollar is an importa
1864<G$1> MS66 PCGS. The 1864 gold dollar is an important Civil War issue that had a mintage of just 5,900 coins. Although this mintage is a little less than the 1863, the '64 is actually more plentiful in the marketplace. A few high quality Gem and Superb Gem examples survive, including this piece. The obverse of this example has a die crack from the border to the leading plume of the headdress, between AT of STATES. Faint clash marks are evident on the reverse. This example is sharply struck with soft, frosty yellow-gold luster and a hint of orange toning. The hair above the forehead is a little flat, and the ribbon knot and bow are similarly weak. A new reference on gold coinage, the Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933, by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth has recently been published. The authors note that this particular date is not represented in the Smithsonian Institution, which means collector Josiah K. Lilly, Jr. was not able to acquire an example. Lilly collected over 6,000 U.S. and world gold coins, but he never got this date. Population: 3 in 66, 10 finer (7/06).
