unionist appeal to the working man
Unionist appeal “To Working Men” during the presidential election of 1864 in which General George McClellan was the Democratic candidate on a “peace at any price” platform. Printed broadside, 9½"x12". This broadside proclaims in part, “...If the South succeeds, the African Slave Trade will be opened again. Do you want any more Negroes in this country? While they are slaves, they do not consume anything that you earn your money by making. As slaves they are of no use at all to you. As free men they are of use to you, for they consume part of your products, thus helping your business...Abraham Lincoln says, ‘...Let no more Western lands be cursed with the labor of the slaves; but give it (under our Homestead Bill) to our own industrious White Freemen’...The order of Liberty is your order! You must not be deceived, but stand by your colors and vote for Free America, united and strong, and Then Let England Interfere If She Dare...” Printed text crisp and clear. Light general toning; light dampstaining; occasional edge chipping with minimal paper loss; o/w in very good condition. Mounted and contained under glass within simple wood frame. Overall 14"x16½". Excellent historical political content.
