Civil War letter dated 11 August 1864 from ''Samuel H.'' to ''Miss Mary C. Mowry'', with original cover postmarked Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, 12 August 1864. Letter reads in part ''...Perhaps you will think it is true as I was talking about going to the army but I hope you wont think so for that war fever is all over and you know better than that. if I had knowed they had raised such a report I would never said anything to you about it for fear you would think it to be true. now Mary I dont want you to think any thing about me going to the armey for I have no notion of goin to the army. the boss was very uneasy about me coming up to work. he was afraid I would not come I think I will get the work prety well through in a few weeks and then I will come and stay a while with you if I can make it...remain your ever true and affectionate lover Samuel H...''
