An authentic piece of Lincoln Momorabilia !! 1864 Calligraphic
rendering of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, written by Lincoln in 1862.
<P>W. H.Pratt was one of the foremost calligraphic artists
during the Civil War years. <P>Using a spyrograph, (invented by
B. Franklin) Pratt wrote
out the text by pen while the spyrograph, connected to his hand, simultaneously duplicated the text. The engraved copy
was
then used to print copies for the benefit of the Abolishionist
Society which used them as flyers to announce their meetings,
or as give-aways at the meeting's conclusion. <P>Pratt chose to recreate the words of the text in the shape of an oval, a seemingly impossible feat of word placement and skill, to have it work out so perfectly. Not only that, but Pratt was able to make some of the penstrokes slightly darker, so that the bust of Lincoln jumps out of the text!! Starting with the word,"Whereas" at the apex, Pratt created a masterpiece, by accomplishing this extraordinary calligraphic feat within the confinds of the oval shape he had chosen for himself.<P>Batches of
the speech were printed, but most were discarded and very few have survived 150 years, with the text so pristine. <P> It is not known who decided to put the calligraphy into the contemporanious, beautifully dove-tailed shadow box frame. <P>The original document was labeled The Proclamation of Emancitation on the top of the text and the
label just below the text read Abraham Lincoln. In order ...
