A real piece of Lincoln Momorabilia !! 1864 Calligraphic
rendering of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, written in
1862. H. F. Pratt was one of the foremost calligraphic artists
during the Civil War years.
Using a spyrograph, (invented by
B. Franklin) Pratt wrote
out the text by pen while the spyrograph duplicated the text by
scratching a copperplate engraving sheet. The engraved copy
was
then used to print copies for the benefit of the Abolishionist
Society which used them as flyers to announce their meetings,
or as give-aways at the meeting's conclusion.
Batches of
the speech were printed, but most were discarded and very few
survived 150 years, with the text so pristine, with the original
label on the back, and in the original, dovetailed mahogany oval
frame!
DIMENSIONS: 11.75" X 13" x 1.5" CONDITION:
EXCELLENT. There is one small transparent stain on the text but
it does not interfere with continuity and the visual pleasure of
seeing how the Calligrapher managed to fit the entire speech
into the confines of the oval design of the frame.
This
remarkable piece of historical record, has the added interest the
calligrapher used to subtly show the bust of the President by
using slightly more ink, and more intense pressure.
This is
a fascinating example of art interacting with historical record. It
is a masterful piece of the Art of Calligraphy!!
