1864 Ballard Breechloading Single Shot Rifle Stamped Merwin & Bray 44 Rimfire ANTIQUE

Merwin & Bray New York manufactured or marketed Ballard firearm.

This 44 rimfire caliber sporting rifle has a 24 inch octagon barrel which has a good
bore with rifling evident but is dark. The barrel exterior has a pleasing smooth even patina.

It is equipped with a blade front sight and a two position rear sight (one leaf has a broken point).
The top flat of the barrel is marked with the caliber, No. 44, and the serial number 17313
which is matching on the frame and barrel.
The frame is silvered with staining. It is marked MERWIN & BRAY AGTS NEW YORK.

The rear stock is in nice cosmetic condition and may have been restored.. no dents
and only a couple of fine cracks on top where the wood meets the steel butt cresent
shaped butt plate..
The forearm has wood loss on top edges of both sides plus a few cracks - see pictures..

The action appears to function correctly and locks up tight - The lever action is quite loose but does
latch up in closed position - the wear probally due to it being 160 YEARS Old !!

Six companies manufactured Ballard firearms over about 30 years starting with the
Ball & Williams Civil War era arms. The majority were made by Marlin between
1875 and 1891. The Merrimack Arms Ballard had a fairly low production of about
2,200 rifles.

Joseph Merwin was involved with marketing and manufacturing revolvers as early
as 1856 when he formed an arms company known as Merwin & Bray.
This company folded after the end of the Civil War.
In 1868 Merwin formed a partnership with William and Milan Hulbert

This is an antique firearm so no PAL is required..
