Rare “FOR PRESIDENT - ABRAHAM LINCOLN” Legend John Gault’s 1864 “Lincoln” Presidential Campaign Medal
1864 Abraham Lincoln & Andrew Johnson Presidential Campaign. Ferrotype Medal. John Gault’s Patent. Gilt Brass. Political and Patriotic. DeWitt/Sullivan AL 1864-94. King #145. Choice About New.
25mm. This choice quality, lustrous example is quite wonderful in having its original thin silk ribbon, used for suspension still partially intact! A great Political and historic Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign related item that is also directly related to the collecting of Encased Postage Stamps as both were designed and produced under the original patent of John Gault. This specimen measures about 1” in diameter, is holed at top as made for suspension, and remarkably still retains a portion of the original white and black silk suspension ribbon! The central obverse Tintype Portrait of a bearded Abraham Lincoln is from 1864. Both Tintype photographs are clear with some irregularities on Lincoln's face portrait and a circle of emulsion disturbance around Andrew Johnson's image. Both Portraits are very well centered. The obverse design has Dual Patriotic Union Shields decorating the moon shaped openings. The flat circular metallic Gilt Brass frame bearing oak and olive wreath and six stars with the large Inscription, “FOR PRESIDENT - ABRAHAM LINCOLN.” The reverse has Tintype Portrait of Andrew Johnson with an olive wreath encircling the portrait and the large Inscription surround reading, “FOR VICE PRESIDENT - ANDREW JOHNSON” with stars to the right and left. John Gault’s master Patent date is on lower rim in tiny letters, “Pat AUG. 12, 1862.” An impressive, superbly original example of this rarely encountered, maker John Gault Design.
