An important, very rare and historic Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign Related Political item that is also related to the collecting Encased Postage Stamps. Holed at top, as made, for suspension and measures about 1” in diameter with a central Tintype Portrait of a bearded Abe Lincoln from 1864. Lincoln’s portrait appears somewhat muddy and dark, while the Andrew Johnson portrait is bright, clear and crisp with excellent contrast being very well centered. The case is bright and lustrous with sharp distinct details. The obverse of this dual sided Patriotic Union Shield is ornately decorated with moon shaped openings displaying the central portrait of Lincoln. The outer circular metallic Gilt Brass frame bearing to right and left a small U.S. Shield enclosed by oak and olive wreath and six stars. The inscription reads, “FOR PRESIDENT - ABRAHAM LINCOLN.” The reverse has central Tintype portrait of Andrew Johnson within the circular frame with an olive wreath encircling his portrait and the inscription, “FOR VICE PRESIDENT - ANDREW JOHNSON” surrounding, with a star set to the right and left dividing. The lower rim portion reads, “Pat AUG. 12, 1862.” in tiny letters. This Political design type is highly favored by both fields of collectors since a complete matched set is limited to the three 1864 Presidential Candidates including: Abraham Lincoln, George McClellan, and John C. Fremont. An important Encased Postage Stamp related Patriotic design by inventor John Gault, enthusiastically collected in the EP, Lincoln, and Political fields alike.
