1864 Abraham Lincoln/Andrew Johnson Election Campaign F
1864 Abraham Lincoln/Andrew Johnson Election Campaign Ferrotype, Designed by John Gault. The image and legend for President Lincoln occupy the front side of this 1" diameter ferrotype. Lincoln’s ferrotype photograph is encased in an hour glass shaped, gilt brass frame, inscribed: "For President - Abraham Lincoln." On the reverse, Andrew Johnson’s photograph appears in a round, gilt brass frame, encircled by the inscription, "For Vice President - Andrew Johnson." The patent date August 12, 1862 appears at the bottom. Johnson's ferrotype shows noticeable wear and some chips, while Lincoln's image, remains quite bright and clear. The frame was designed by John Gault, who patented this design and also made the Encased Postage Stamps of the Civil War era, for use as small change due to a shortage of coin. This is an extremely rare and delightful souvenir of the 1864 Presidential Campaign. Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,500.
