1864 50C MS67 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint struck 379,10
1864<50C> MS67 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint struck 379,100 half dollars in 1864, a generous production given that silver coins did not circulate during this era. They were hoarded, since Federal paper money was plentiful and could not be redeemed for specie. Likely, the half dollar production was not intended for domestic use. Instead, the coins were exported in return for trade goods. Foreign countries understandably preferred payment in bullion rather than paper money, particularly with the U.S. involved in a costly civil war. Many pieces returned to U.S. circulation in the 1870s, once specie payment was resumed. This intricately struck Superb Gem displays vigorous cartwheel sheen, and the peripheral medium gold toning is attractive. The reverse is well preserved, while the obverse field has only minor contact. Census: 3 in 67, 0 finer (7/06).
