<B>1864 $5 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS.</B></I> The 1864 proof five has a mintage of 50 pieces. While this is a tiny output, the survivorship is higher than other dates from the era and as such it is considered the most "common" date as a proof in the No Motto series. In spite of the multiple resubmissions that have artificially inflated the population data, with more than 30 pieces certified today, probably only 12-15 individual proofs are actually still extant. This number includes three pieces that are held in institutional collections--two in the Smithsonian and one in the ANS. Because of the artificially high numbers seen at the services, it is also difficult to discern just how many coins are known in this and better grades. That being said, at least several (whatever number that is) are known finer than this piece.<BR> Proofs of this date all show a common diagnostic: a die scratch (or is it a short die break?) below Liberty's ear. According to Breen (1988) this diagnostic was observed on the Auction '80 and the Clapp/Eliasberg coins.<BR> This is a lovely example and one that also is numismatically interesting. A streak of slight granularity is seen in the lower obverse field that extends to the rim and then runs between the denticles and stars 10-13. Otherwise, the surfaces display the deeply reflective fields one would expect from a proof gold coin. Also, given the limited mintage of this date, the devices are heavily frosted and present a strong gold-on-black contrast on both obverse and reverse. A few small, stray marks keep the coin from a full Gem classification, but this is a singularly impressive No Motto proof five that will undoubtedly be included in a high grade proof type set.<BR><BR><b>Shipping:</b> Coin/Currency (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.heritageauctions.com/common/shipping.php">view shipping information</a>)
