<Our item number 135099>1864, 3¢ Fractional Currency. Third Issue, light background to portrait. PCGS Very Choice New 64. Fr-1226. KL-3252. This fractional piece is one of about 100 pieces that were originally part of one lot in the 1964 Stack's sale of the George O. Walton Collection, famous for its inclusion of one of the five known 1913 Liberty Head Nickels. After Mr. Walton passed away in a car crash in 1963, his family was mistakenly told that the coin was fake. It sat in a closet in North Carolina for the next 40 years, only to reappear and be correctly authenticated at a coin convention after a reward for its reappearance was offered. This 3 cent piece, pedigreed to that same collection, is an attractive well-margined example.
Estimated Value $125 - 150.
Ex: George O.
