1864 3CS PR67 NGC. Writing in 1977, Walter Breen (Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins: 1722-1977) states that "1864 is one of the most difficult years of all..." While the author was no doubt speaking as a frustrated researcher, this statement could easily have been written by a collector who specializes in Civil War era proof coinage. Virtually all denominations produced this year are rare, particularly in the finer grades, and some are all but unobtainable. It gives us great pleasure, therefore, to offer a lovely set of 1864-dated proof coins in this sale, among which is the present Three Cent Silver. With a closed top to the D in UNITED and recutting on the left base of the 4 in the date, this coin is most likely one of the original 470 proof Three Cent Silvers delivered in 1864. There is no evidence of die sinking in the upper right obverse field, a feature that suggests a striking date prior to July of that year. Deeply reflective fields shimmer beneath rainbow colored obverse target toning and cobalt-blue, orange-russet, and antique-copper reverse patination. Indirect angles also reveal the latter color on the obverse. Both sides are fully brought up with nary a distracting blemish to report. This issue enjoys considerable demand from date collectors because of the rarity of the similarly dated business strike (12,000 pieces produced). Population: 8 in 67, there is only one finer (11/02).
