1864<3CS> PR65 Cameo PCGS. As the Civil War progressed, fewer and fewer actual U.S. coins were found in circulation. Instead, substitutes were introduced by the private sector such as encased postage and Civil War tokens. In 1864, only 12,000 business strike three cent silver pieces were struck, plus an additional 470 proofs. This is an outstanding example of this low mintage rarity. The fields are deeply mirrored and there is a noticeable amount of mint frost over the devices. The obverse shows an even layer of mauve patina, while the reverse is virtually brilliant. An exciting coin and seldom seen finer. Population: 8 in 65, 5 finer (9/06).
