1864 $3 PR64 PCGS. Despite a paltry original mintage of 50 pieces, the 1864 is among the more common proof Three Dollar gold pieces from the 1860s. Of course, we are using the term "common" in a relative sense because, with just 13-16 pieces believed extant, the proof 1864 is a rare coin when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics. We note some cameo contrast on the reverse of the present example, but the obverse is mostly brilliant in finish. Rich green-gold color envelops both sides and deepens to orange-gold hues at certain angles. There are not all that many noticeable distractions, but a pair of pinscratches in the obverse field before the first A in AMERICA are mentioned. The low mintage (2,630 pieces) and rarity of the business strike 1864 Three further enhances the importance of this specimen striking.Ex: Buddy Ebsen Sale (Superior, 5-6/1987), lot 2403; Michael I.
