1864 $3 AU58 NGC. Reflective surfaces exhibit deep orange toning that creates extraordinary eye appeal. All design elements are sharp, and the surfaces show minuscule abrasions. The 1864 ranks among low-mintage three dollar pieces with production limited to 2,630 coins. Examples are usually available despite the mintage, due to a high survival rate. Numismatists once believed that hoarding activities during the Civil War created lower survival rates, with coins melted at a later date. Current population data suggests the opposite, with low-mintages explaining scarcity. Census: 38 in 58, 34 finer (6/07).
From The DAX Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
