1864 2C Small Motto MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. A small number of Small Motto two cent pieces were struck in early 1864--probably no more than a couple of thousand coins. As such, these Small Motto two cent pieces were the first U.S. coins issued to bear the Congressionally mandated motto IN GOD WE TRUST. This is a particularly pleasing example. Well balanced overall, probably 80% of both obverse and reverse retain full red mint color. Almost a complete strike, the die crack on the upper reverse is light, indicating this piece was struck somewhere in the middle part of the production run for this issue.

Coin Engraver: James B.
