1864 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-387, Pollock-455, Low R.7, PR67 Red and Brown PCGS. Ex: Bass. Similar to the regular issue 1864 Seated quarter, but the motto IN GOD WE TRUST has been added on a scroll in the upper reverse field. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Formerly offered as lot 1123 in Part I of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, where it was described in part as, "A superb example, sharply struck, with deeply reflective Proof surfaces. Lovely pinkish orange is accented by bright blue, especially on the reverse. This is a very rare issue in copper. In fact, Andrew Pollock listed only this coin and one other example, from the collection of King Farouk...A third example may exist, as a 1991 auction price is reported for a certified PR-65 example appearing in an August Heritage Bullet Sale." Today, in early 2007, it is believed that there may be as many as eight or nine examples known of this variety. Although there are some differences (probably due to die lapping), it appears that this piece and the 1864 Paquet Reverse quarter (J-384) are both products of the same obverse die.
Ex: Robert Branigan Estate (Bowers and Merena, 8/1978), lot 1798; Harry W.
