1864 25C MS66 NGC. Briggs 1-A, as are most Mint State survivors of this Civil War issue. With the war in its fourth year and circulating silver still absent from most areas of the United States, the Philadelphia Mint had little reason to produce a large number of Quarters in 1864. Indeed, only 94,070 1864-P Quarters were delivered, and the vast majority of survivors grade no finer than VF. The obverse die of the Briggs 1-A marriage is easily identifiable by a pair of chips (as produced) on Liberty's thigh. There are also clashmarks (as struck) in the reverse field above and below the eagle's wings, and a few spindly peripheral cracks are seen on the obverse. Otherwise, this lovely Gem is smooth, and grade-limiting abrasions are virtually nonexistent. What's more, the luster is truly amazing, being bright and frosty with modest hints of reflectivity in the fields. The sharply struck features are overlaid in delicate, iridescent, champagne-gold shades. A coin that will improve the technical and aesthetic quality of any specialized Seated Quarter collection.
