1864 $20 MS61 PCGS. A well struck piece that exhibits extensive bright luster and has a surprisingly virtually unabraded reverse. A couple of grazes on Liberty's eye and cheek are of interest primarily as pedigree markers. Gold coins did not circulate in the East during the Civil War, and most of the production of 204,235 pieces was presumably exported overseas and eventually melted. While the 1864 Double Eagle is merely scarce in XF and AU grades, it is very rare in Mint State. PCGS has only graded 10 examples as such, with 7 finer (2/05). This lot offers an exceptionally rare opportunity to obtain an Uncirculated 1864 Twenty, which would be a standout in any advanced collection of this challenging denomination.
