1864 $2 1/2 PR64 Cameo NGC. This coin was previously offered as lot 7176 in our Philadelphia 2000 Signature Sale, where it was cataloged as: "Like most other gold issues, the Quarter Eagle was produced in limited numbers in 1864. Mint records indicate that 2,824 business strikes and 50 proofs flowed from the presses at the Philadelphia Mint. The business strikes disappeared either into circulation or were melted and, as such, the issue is one of the premier rarities in the Liberty Quarter Eagle series. Of the proofs, Akers asserts that most examples probably never left the Mint. The coin that we highlight here is, therefore, one of a mere 16 representatives believed extant. The contrast is simply stunning as the fully frosted devices float atop the deep, watery fields. There are mottled swirls of haziness over both sides, but the original orange-gold color is undiminished in intensity. Minimally marked with awe-inspiring eye appeal." A tiny planchet void (as produced) in the obverse field between star 1 and 2 helped us trace the pedigree of this important specimen. The coin realized $13,225 in August of 2000.
