1864 $2 1/2--Cleaned--ANACS. Unc Details, Net AU50. One of the great rarities in the Liberty Quarter Eagle series, the 1864 started as a low mintage issue with just 2,824 business strikes delivered. The chaos of the Civil War undoubtedly led to many examples being melted or otherwise lost to future generations of collectors. Not only is this issue rare in an absolute, but it is also extremely difficult to locate in Mint State. The two major grading services (NGC and PCGS) report a mere three Uncirculated survivors (11/02), a fact that further enhances the importance of this ANACS-certified example. This coin may not be free of problems, but it still presents remarkably well. Both sides are crisply detailed in all areas save for a little softness of strike over the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers on the reverse. There are not many abrasions, those that are present being generally small and not singularly conspicuous. Orange-gold color deepens in shades as the surfaces tilt away from the light. The cleaning is evident through scattered hairlines. Despite the impairment, we anticipate that this coin will see spirited bidding at the auction in Long Beach. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
