1864 1C One Cent, Unlisted in Judd, Pollock-426A, Low R.6, PR65 NGC. Struck from the same dies as those of the regular issue 1864 No L Indian cent but, while struck in copper-nickel, this coin was impressed on a planchet whose thickness most closely resembles that of a bronze cent. Different metallurgical compositions were struck of this pattern and little is known of the exact alloys of these coins. These pieces are known in both proof and business strike format. This piece is designated as a business strike. However, this could just as easily be called a singly struck proof. The fields are deeply reflective and there is an area of heavy die polish in front of the ear. The only characteristic that makes one believe this is a business strike is the softness of details on the tips of the feathers in the headdress--an area that is usually better defined on regular issue proofs than seen on this piece. The surfaces are bright with little toning over the original gray-tan coloration. An interesting piece for the pattern or Indian cent collector.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
