1864 1C L On Ribbon MS66 Red PCGS. A new obverse hub design was introduced to the Indian Cent series in 1864. This type, which would continue in use until 1886, is most readily identifiable by the presence of the designer's initial L on the ribbon that forms part of the obverse portrait. Snow (1992) estimates that only 5 million of the 39.2 million bronze Indian Cents delivered in 1864 are of the new hub variety. Long recognized as a key date in this widely collected series, the 1864 L On Ribbon is also a noteworthy condition rarity. Only six MS66 Red examples are reported at NGC and PCGS combined, and there are none certified finer (10/02). The present Gem carries an impressive pedigree, and the eye appeal is truly extraordinary for an issue that is typically offered worn and/or lackluster. Glowing orange-red luster shimmers over both sides, all features of which are sharply detailed. As befits the grade, there are no mentionable abrasions and no bothersome carbon. This is the finest 1864 L On Ribbon Cent that we have offered through one of our Signature Sales in at least ten years, and it is not likely to be matched anytime soon.Ex: Dr. Alan Epstein Collection. From the Joseph P.
