1864 1C Indian Cent, Unlisted in Judd, Pollock-426A, R.8(?), MS65 NGC. The dies are those of the regular issue 1846 No L Indian Cent, but, while struck in copper-nickel, this coin was impressed on a planchet whose thickness most closely resembles that of the bronze Cents. Pollock (1994) was aware of only one example of this variety, the coin that sold as lot 656 in Stack's October 1992 sale of the Floyd T. Starr Collection. We do know of a second example, the coin that sold as lot 7460 in our February 2001 Long Beach Signature Sale, and the present representative appears to be a third. Whereas the other two coins are proofs, NGC has designated this coin a business strike. Both sides are overall medium tan in appearance with blushes of delicate champagne tinting here and there. There are no mentionable abrasions, but pedigree concerns compel us to mention a trivial fleck of verdigris (one will need a loupe to see it) in the obverse field between the second and third feathers from the top of Liberty's headdress. The otherwise sharp strike wanes noticeably over the lower obverse (affecting the date) and upper reverse peripheries.
