1864 1C Copper Nickel PR67 Cameo PCGS. The proof cents
1864 1C Copper Nickel PR67 Cameo PCGS. The proof cents of 1864 are subdivided into three collectible categories: the 1864 copper-nickel alloy; the 1864 French bronze alloy, no designer's initial on neck; and the 1864 French bronze alloy, designer's initial on neck. The estimated mintage of 370 specimens for the copper-nickel variety is a guess, albeit a logical one, from Walter Breen, who extrapolated it from the number of silver proof sets (which would include the cent as a minor coin) issued prior to the change in composition. Though this figure doubles the projected mintages of the other two varieties combined, it is tiny compared to the production of modern proofs. Unimpaired copper-nickel survivors are more difficult to come by than the Population Report would suggest, and this example, with its combination of exceptional preservation and strong cameo contrast, sits alone at the top of the PCGS standings for its issue.
Every detail is exquisitely struck on this Superb Gem, from the veins of the feathers and the four diamonds on the ribbon to the finest features of the leaves and arrows. The pale straw-orange surfaces have unusually strong reflectivity and are free of distracting haze. While the devices display only modest frost, they project boldly from the mirrors, and the contrast is undeniable. Magnification is practically a necessity to find a flaw in the fields, and the rest of the piece is similarly well-preserved. A great opportunity for the connoisseur of this classic series.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
