1864 1C Bronze PR67 Red and Brown PCGS. Beginning in July of 1864, the Philadelphia Mint substituted the new bronze Indian Cent for its copper-nickel counterpart in proof sets. Approximately 100 proof sets were delivered that month, and, when combined with some coins that were sold individually, the original mintage of the proof 1864 bronze Cent is most likely 150 pieces. Far fewer are believed extant, and only five survivors have received a PR67 designation at NGC and PCGS (10/02). An exquisite Red and Brown specimen, the coin in this lot displays a rich olive-brown and orange-red sheen that is more lustrous on the obverse. The reverse also reveals lilac tinged iridescence at direct angles. Appreciably reflective and smooth, both sides are crisply detailed throughout. This is the highest graded 1864 bronze Cent of any color that we have handled in at least ten years. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
