1864 1C Bronze PR65 Red PCGS. Beginning in July 1864, the Mint substituted bronze Cents for their copper-nickel counterparts in its proof sets. Including the limited number of singles that were also delivered, the original mintage of the proof 1864 bronze Indian Cent is believed to be in the neighborhood of just 150 pieces. There are precious few examples extant at the PR65 Red grade level, the present Gem displaying fulsome mint luster in orange-red shades. Fully brought up throughout, the surfaces are silky-smooth from rim to rim. We last offered a similarly graded specimen as lot 6036 in our July 2002 New York Signature Sale. That coin traded hands for $7,188. Population: 9 in 65 Red, with just two finer (10/02).From the Joseph P. Gorrell Collection.
