<B>1864 1C Bronze No L PR64 Red PCGS.</B></I> Proof 1864 bronze Indian cents are quite rare, and especially elusive with fully brilliant red or orange mint color. The original mintage is not specifically known. The <I>Guide Book</B></I> records the mintage at 150 coins, the same figure that is used by PCGS in their <I>Population Report.</B></I> In his various encyclopedias, Walter Breen suggested that just 100 or perhaps a few more were coined in proof format. In his <I>Buyer's Guide,</B></I> Dave Bowers suggested a mintage in the range of 400 to 500 coins, still an enticingly low mintage. Regardless of the number minted, this issue is the second rarest Proof Indian cent behind only the 1864-L issue. This Choice proof is sharply struck with moderately deep mirrored fields and some light contrast.
