<B>1864 1C Bronze No L PR64 Red PCGS.</B></I> A few tiny specks on each side of this near-Gem proof prevent a higher grade assignment, yet also suggest the originality of this piece. Both sides have rich orange color, slightly deeper on the obverse. Although not designated as such, we feel that this piece qualifies as a Cameo proof. Only a few dozen proofs of this variety were coined in 1864, with most mintage estimates ranging between 50 and 250 coins, although some have suggested as many as 500 proofs were coined. Such a figure seems remarkably high.
