ALS from D.E. Cunningham of the 19th Maine Infantry, Company C. Brief pencil missive datelined ''Camp 19th Regt. Maine Vols. near Peatersburge / Virginia Aug 1 [1864],'' reads in full: ''…Mr. Kingsburg, Sir I want you to send me two (2) hats insted of one as my tent mate wants one to. So you can get 2 just alike and send me and charge the same to me. Color Black Size 6 7/8 Size 7 1/8 Get as light ones as you can and oblige me. D.E. Cunningham P.S. Please send them as soon as convenient.'' Cunningham mustered into Company C on 2 September 1863. During his service, the 19th Maine was engaged at Bristoe Station, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Totopotomoy Creek, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. On 15 December 1864 Cunningham transferred to the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery, which saw action at Hatcher's Run and Bailey's Crossroads and later participated in the grand review at Washington. The 1st Maine mustered out on 11 September 1865. Letter measures 4.5'' x 7'' and runs 1.25pp. Minimal soiling, otherwise near fine condition.
