Letter from Charles Everett of the 124th Ohio Infantry, Company K, to his father in Sandusky, Ohio. Accompanied by cover. Letter reads in part: ''Steamer Clara Dolsen / Cairo March 13 1864 PM. Dear Father…Have you received my bounty claim yet it is about time they said they would forward it directly. I wish you would go in the back room in the office and express my pair of thick soled boots. I will forward my clothes as quick as I can get a box…that surgeon I spoke about in my last letter is a very good kind hearted man. The boys bother me so I cannot write. Direct your letters in care of Capt. Scott. Ship Clara Dolsen, Cairo, Ill. Do Sibbie and Lillie go to school yet. Tell them I would like to receive a letter from them…'' Everett enlisted as a Private into Company K on 12 August 1863 and was mustered out as a Sergeant on 13 July 1865. The regiment was heavily involved in the battle of Chickamauga, where they lost 140 men and control of Missionary Ridge. Everett also participated in the siege and surrender of Atlanta. Ink letter runs 2pp. Some separation at folds, otherwise near fine condition.
