1864 10C Seated Liberty Dime, Judd-381, Pollock-449, Low R.7, PR65 Brown NGC. The regular issue designs for the 1864 Seated Liberty dime. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. About a dozen examples of this restrike (technically novodel) dime are known. The term restrike assumes that there was an original, although in the case of this 1864 copper dime, there were no original examples struck in copper, thus the term novodel is more appropriate. This term is adapted from Russian numismatics, and is becoming increasingly widespread in the field of American numismatics. The most famous American novodels are the proof dollars dated 1801, 1802, and 1803, but not struck until the late 1850s. Saul Teichman believes that the 1864 copper dimes were struck circa 1869, commenting: "These are believed to be restrikes made circa 1869 and into the early 1870s for inclusion in sets with the With Motto quarter, half dollar, and silver dollar. These sets were made in silver, copper, nickel and aluminum for sale to collectors." This Gem example has moderately deep mirrors with attractive chestnut surfaces with iridescent toning and slight traces of red mint color.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
