1864<$10> PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. An impressive and extremely important example of proof gold coinage, and one of possibly a dozen to survive. Only 50 coins were minted in preparation for the release on February 11, but certainly far fewer were actually sold. Probably not more than 20 examples were actually sold at the time, and certainly some of those were later spent. Of approximately a dozen still surviving today, at least two are in museums (the Smithsonian and ANS coins), and others are impaired. Without a doubt, this is one of only a handful of attractive, unimpaired proofs in existence.
Some pedigree confusion exists for this issue. In the unpublished manuscript for the Trompeter large denomination proof gold collection, that coin was traced back to the Gaston DiBello collection, lot 1075, reappearing in Stack's sale of 4/1978 and their session of Auction '79. The DiBello coin was also identified as the coin that Harry Bass purchased, reappearing in the 10/1999 sale of the Bass Collection. The DiBello and Bass plates certainly appear to match. Of course, the present Lake Highlands Collection coin is neither of the above, although its pedigree has not been specifically determined.
Both sides of this attractive proof example display exceptional contrast with highly lustrous and deep yellow-gold devices, surrounded by fully mirrored fields. A hint of green color is observed. A few wispy hairlines are visible in the fields, and a couple of breaks are noted in the luster of the central obverse motif. Regardless, this is a lovely example that will certainly please the connoisseur.
From The Lake Highlands Collection.

Important notice:<
