1863 Union Draft Exemption Certificate being an “Alien”
September 5, 1863-Dated Civil War Period, Union Partly-Printed Document, Draft Exemption Certificate due to being an “Alien,” Choice Very Fine.
This is an original and fully signed Union Draft “Certificate of Non-Liability...” which measures about 8” x 10.25”, 1 page, at Concord, Massachusets. Being a scarce exemption form to dodge the draft. Document reads, in full:

“Certificate of Non-Liability to be Given by the Board of Enrollment. / We, the subscribers, composing the Board of Enrollment of the Seventh District of the State of Massachusetts, provided for in section 8, Act of Congress ‘for enrolling and calling out the national forces,’ approved March 3, 1863, hereby certify that Mitchell Lawson, of Ward 3 Lowell, Middlesex county, State of Massachusetts, having given satisfactory evidence that he is not properly subject to do military duty, as required by said act, by reason of Being an Alien, is exempt from all liability to military duty for the term of The present draft.”

Document is signed by Provost Marshall and President of Board of Enrollment and another menber of the Board. Folds, toning, edge chips.
