4pp. letter from an unidentified Union soldier. Dated 28 February 1863, letter reads in part: ''…loving wife…we got orders…to get in to rank that the rebbels was coming. So I jumped up and put on my boots and grabbed my gun…and cattredge case and belt…the artillery had came out…they planted there cannons out side off our brest works and that we ware to stay in side of them for the suport our batterys so we stood in the street for about half an hour and we got orders to stack our arms and that we mite go to our tents and rest as we pleased we was waching the signell light…these posts is about 50 or 60 feet high…There is a platform that one can stand on the top one man gets on the top…he has a flag wich he waves and then the one on the post waves to him…at night they talk with lanterns…I went to my tent and laid down to sleep with my cattredge box and belt on and I had just got in a dose when I herd the orders to fill in ranks and I jumped out of bed and to my gun I thought that the rebbels was coming and when we got in ranks we got orders to take our gun…I can't think that there is any danger of them coming here but if they should com they will find some boddy here too we have our cannons planted in the forts readdy for them…'' Letter measures 5'' x 8''.
