Under Contract by the state of Massachusetts, Samuel Norris and W.T. Clements won the bidding to produce 11,000 muskets for the State Militia for the war effort. There was an 1861 and an 1863 musket run at a bid of $206,128 which was the lowest bid and in the quickest time to produce. This musket has been professionally shortened in the period from a 40” barrel with three bands to a 30” barrel with two bands. It is 58 caliber and still retains the ‘TULIP HEAD’ ramrod. It functions well and has a repaired stock that was done professionally in the time period. It has a U.S. on the buttplate and stamped in the top of the wood stock are the #s 2 and 21. Painted on the left side of the stock, in period paint, are the numbers ‘32’. There are supposed to be the cartouches of “A.J.N” in a rectangle and “J.H.” in a circle, but they are not visible to the naked eye. One very interesting item is that the original lanyard has survived with the gun. Overall, a beautiful piece of Civil War History and an identified Union weapon from the Massachusetts Militia.
