1863 SATTERLEE HOSPITAL SOLDIER'S NEWSPAPER WITH ARTIFICIAL LEG ADVERTISEMENT
A good war-date Union hospital newspaper, 4pp. large folio, entitled: "HOSPITAL REGISTER," published at the Satterlee Hospital, West Philadelphia, Pa., Nov. 28, 1863 being Vol. 2 number 14. Appearing in the mast head is finely engraved areal view of Satterlee Hospital and of patients being administered to in their hospital beds. In the front page's first column is a touching tribute poem titled: "The Dead At Gettysburg" while other articles through out the newspaper include "After Peace", "Touching Conservatism", "Affairs in Europe", and "The Hospital School." On the inside of the newspaper is a list of unclaimed soldier letters that are waiting to be picked up at the local post office; then the "Military Directory, Department of the Susquehanna, Headquarters 1125 Girand Street, Maj. Gen. Geo. Cadwalader Commanding." followed by a list of all the medical personnel at the area's US General hospitals including Satterlee, McClellan, Mower, Chester and Turner's Lane to name a few. There is also a list of those admitted to those recently admitted to the hospitals and those who have died. These directories are very informative to researchers of medical matters of the Civil War while an advertisement in the rear of the newspaper illustrates the sale of: "John Ford's Patent Metallic Skeleton Leg." A must-have for those who lost a leg for the Union! Overall very good.
