1863-S $5 AU58 NGC. To give an idea of the conditional rarity of this coin, the Smithsonian Institution's sole example is an extensively circulated Very Fine example. In the early days of the San Francisco Mint, gold coinage was much in demand (in distinct preference to unassayed gold dust or nuggets, indivisible large gold bars, or the detested paper money that was unacceptable out West), and most newly minted pieces flowed into the channels of commerce with no delay. The 1863-S is no exception, and it is accordingly all but unknown in Mint State. In fact, PCGS has certified a single Uncirculated piece (an MS61), while NGC has never certified a Mint State example as of this writing.
The present AU58 piece--among the handful of finest-obtainable pieces--is thus cause for celebration and spirited bidding on the part of rare-date gold enthusiasts. The yellow-gold surfaces retain nearly all of their original exuberant luster, with a bold strike and only light abrasions on this briefly circulated specimen. Census: 23 in 58, 0 finer (6/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
