1863-S $20 AU58 NGC. With the appearance of a Mint Sta
1863-S<$20> AU58 NGC. This near-Mint example has the appearance and eye appeal of a full Mint State specimen with its frosty, fulsome luster. The surfaces have scattered abrasions that are expected on these large gold coins, along with a few small surface marks on each side. The light lemon-gold and apricot color variations are quite pleasing to the eye. The strike is somewhat weak on the first three obverse stars, but the other design elements are sharply delineated.
Prior to the discovery of the S.S. Brother Jonathan treasure, the 1863-S was one of the scarcest San Francisco issues of its era in high grades. Dave Bowers, who handled the treasure, commented: "The treasure from the S.S. Brother Jonathan brought to market a group of AU and Mint State coins, accounting for most of the higher grade pieces known today, although at least a dozen different Mint State coins were on the market in earlier times." The present cataloger, who was also closely involved with the treasure in the late 1990s, has seen every example from that remarkable offering. This specimen has a different look and feel, and was probably not from that treasure, but rather, known in earlier years.
From The Wyoming Collection.
